Q & A
Q. I am coming from out of town. Where should I stay? What should I Do?
We know coming to NYC can be a little daunting, especially if its your first time! Because we want you to love our home as much as we do, we've put together a page of tips, tricks, and overall NYC Advice. This page includes suggestions on where to stay, what to do, and how to get around best. We hope it helps!
Q. What time should I arrive at the venue?
Arrive at 5:30 to settle in, and the ceremony will begin around 5:45. Cocktail hour and reception will follow immediately after, in the same space.
Q. how do i get to the venue?
The closest subway stops to Greenwood Park are the R train at 25th Street (from there it is a 15-minute walk) or the F and G trains at 15 St-Prospect Park (a 10-minute walk). Note: Our usual subway station, Prospect Av, is currently under construction. Check MTA's website closer to the time of our wedding to see if it is open by then. If it is, it is also a 10-minute walk.
If you are new to NYC, we recommend downloading a transit app called CityMapper to your phone. Simply put in the address (555 7th Avenue, Brooklyn), and it will give you a route based on any subway service changes – they are sneaky!
Alternatively, you can always hail a cab - tell them you're going to "7th Avenue and 19th Street in Park Slope, Brooklyn." or use Uber or Lyft to take you to 555 7th Avenue, Brooklyn.
Q. Can I bring a date?
Unless you have a guest noted on your envelope, please ask us directly just to make sure there will be room.
Q. What should I wear?
Whatever makes you feel your best! We want you to look great and feel great. But if you want specifics - we'd say "cocktail" or "festive" attire. Keep in mind that the bocce courts at the venue are dusty and there are some spots with gravel, so maybe leave your finest stilettos at home.
Q. Will food be served?
Yes! We will have plenty of food and drink for omnivores, vegetarians, and vegans alike. Please note any restrictions in your RSVP, and we will do our best to accommodate.
Q. Will there be dancing?
Yes! There will be plenty of dancing, but also bocce ball, a photo booth, and more.
Q. Will last names be changing after the wedding?
Nope! Sarah Serpas and Jan Diehm will remain unchanged. While #theDerpases is a wonderful hashtag, we prefer our last names and figured hyphenating them would only create a tongue twister.
Q. WILL there be two bridal parties?
We'll have plenty of close friends and family making sure this wedding goes smoothly, but neither of us will have a bridal party.
Q. How can I help y'all have the best time during your wedding day?
Have fun, take pictures (#theDerpases), and get to know at least one person you didn't know before! We love all of you and can't wait to see you in the same place.
Q. What if I want to donate my services to a cause instead of give a gift?
Please do! We know this wedding wouldn't be possible without the hard fought battles of the past, and we hope you will join us to support the ongoing fights for equal rights. We have options for you to donate to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Planned Parenthood, or GLSEN on our Zola registry page.
Q. Who took all of these adorable pictures on your wedding website?
That would be the very talented Spencer Starnes (who Sarah's known since middle school). He hung out with us for a few hours at Grand Central Station and the New York Transit Museum to take all these great shots.
Q. How did you make your invitations?
We were able to letterpress them ourselves, and you can learn more here!
